Hot News: Check out the latest update on the New Student Rec Center and $42 million capitial construction approval

In 1987, the PSU President's Task Force concluded that "the current facility [Peter Stott Center] does not meet the needs of today’s students and serious thought must be given to the creation of a new building if we are going to meet everybody’s needs".

The current Peter Stott Center does not meet our needs. In 1987, enrollment was 14,000 students. The 2012 projection is 35,000 students. The decades old Stott Center no longer provides the resources we need.

The proposed New Rec Center is the answer to the President's Task Force and countless student requests for an improved facility. Students have expressed support in a survey, at our open forums, and by passing a referendum in the 2004 elections.

Get Involved! Read the original proposal, sign up on our listserv, let us know what you want. This project is entirely focused on students. Your insights are welcome.

The proposed Rec Center is unique and powerful:
  • The site for the new Center is now slated to be on the Urban Plaza, where the current PCAT building is located.

  • We will use sustainable design features in our building construction and operations.

  • Every effort would be made to keep money in Oregon by using Oregon products and businesses if environmentally and fiscally possible.

  • Dedication of art funds to students and/or PSU alumni (still pending permission).

  • Model accessibility features for people with disAbilities.

  • Unique partnership with University in providing administrative offices along with the recreation center. Everybody benefits! The offices are NOT paid for by students.

  • This project will create new student jobs, nearly 25% of the operating budget goes right back to students in student pay.

  • Space has been set aside for a student-run business.

  • There will be over 100 student jobs in the new rec center.
